Steps to create a Dependent ComboBox on a Form

Note: Dependent ComboBox won't work on a Grid. Use LOV if you need dependent fields within a Grid.

What is Dependent ComboBox ?

The values listed in a ComboBox are based on the value selected in another ComboBox.

Steps to create Dependent ComboBox

  • Let us consider two dependant combo box say Risk-Type level1 and Risk-Type level2.
  • Now before you configure the dependant combo box, you need to setup the settings as follows.


  • Here you need to specify all the risk types in Risk Name column.
  • Then Specify whether that Risk type is  Level1( Risk-Type level1) or Level2(Risk-Type level2) by selecting a value from the Risk Level combo box.
  • After that select the Parent Risk from the Parent combo box which would be level 1 Risk Types.
  • To obain only Risk Type Level1 in the Parent Risk combo box you need to specify th edefault where clause as #level11#='Level1'

How to Configure a Dependant Combo box ?

  • First go to the customize Page where you want to configure the dependant combo box.
  • Now select the item type under which you want to create a combo box.
  • Click on new .


  • From the property pallet, select the item type as Combo box.


  • Then specify the combo data source, select the display attribute, value attribute and view attribute.
  •  Display Attribute: It the attribute that the combo box displays.
  • Value Attribute: Value attribute is the value which  the combo box refers.
  • View Attribute : Here the View attribute is the top containers data sources attribute which contains combo box as one of its child.  View attribute is which the value of the value attribute stores.


  • Now specify the Default Where Clause as #level11#='Level1'.
  • Now create a second combo box and specify the combo data source( which is same as Risk Type Level1).
  • Select the display attribute, value attribute and view attribute.


  • And now specify the Default Where Clause as #level11#='Level2' and #parent11#=#{Risks.RiskTypeLevel1}  
  • Save the changes and go to the page.
  • Now when you click on the Risk Type Level1 combo box all the Level1 Risk Names are displayed.
  • When you click on the second combo box Risk Type Level 2, it will display the list of risks that are associated to particular type of Risk type level 1.
